Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson, souvent appelé Dr Johnson, était un écrivain anglais qui a apporté une contribution durable à la littérature anglaise en tant que poète, essayiste, moraliste, critique littéraire, biographe, éditeur et lexicographe. Johnson était un dévot anglican et conservé Tory, et a été décrit comme «l'homme de lettres le plus distingué dans l'histoire de l'anglais». Il est également le sujet de «l'oeuvre unique la plus célèbre d'art biographique dans toute la littérature»: la vie de Samuel Johnson de James Boswell. Né à Lichfield, dans le Staffordshire, Johnson a fréquenté Pembroke College, Oxford pour un peu plus d'un an, avant que son manque de fonds l'oblige à partir. Après avoir travaillé comme enseignant, il a déménagé à Londres, où il a commencé à écrire pour The Gentleman's Magazine.
