Le plump de Kentish est un petit wader dans la famille des oiseaux plover. Malgré son nom, cette espèce ne se reproduit plus dans le Kent, ni même en Grande-Bretagne. Il se reproduit dans une large gamme, du sud de l'Europe au Japon et en Equateur, au Pérou, au Chili, au sud des États-Unis et dans les Caraïbes. Le Comité nord-américain de l'Union des ornithologues américains et la Liste mondiale des oiseaux du CIO ont voté ou avant juillet 2011 pour diviser les formes américaines en un nouveau pige neige d'espèces, mais aucun autre comité n'a voté pour modifier la taxonomie. Dans cette optique, les formes américaines peuvent maintenant être trouvées sous une espèce distincte indiquant le pluvial enneigé, mais toutes les formes peuvent encore être trouvées jusqu'à ce que d'autres actions soient prises.
