Le mouvement Know Know n'était qu'un mouvement politique américain qui fonctionnait à l'échelle nationale au milieu des années 1850. Il a promis de purifier la politique américaine en limitant ou en finissant l'influence des catholiques irlandais et d'autres immigrants, reflétant ainsi le sentiment nativiste et anti-catholique. Les craintes populaires ont été marquées par le fait que le pays était submergé par des immigrants catholiques allemands et irlandais qu'ils considéraient comme hostiles aux valeurs républiques et contrôlés par le pape à Rome. Principalement actif de 1854 à 1856, il s'est efforcé de freiner l'immigration et la naturalisation, mais a rencontré peu de succès. L'adhésion était limitée aux hommes protestants. The Know Nothing movement was an American political movement that operated on a national basis during the mid-1850s. It promised to purify American politics by limiting or ending the influence of Irish Catholics and other immigrants, thus reflecting nativism and anti-Catholic sentiment. It was empowered by popular fears that the country was being overwhelmed by German and Irish Catholic immigrants, whom they saw as hostile to republican values and controlled by the Pope in Rome. Mainly active from 1854 to 1856, it strove to curb immigration and naturalization, but met with little success. Membership was limited to Protestant males. There were few prominent leaders, and the largely middle-class membership fragmented over the issue of slavery. The most prominent leaders were ex-President Millard Fillmore, Massachusetts Congressman Nathaniel P. Banks, and former congressman Lewis C. Levin.
