Les latériaux sont des types de sols riches en fer et en aluminium, formés dans des zones tropicales chaudes et humides. Presque toutes les latéripes sont rouillées à cause des oxydes de fer. Ils se développent par une intempéries intensives et durables de la pierre maternelle sous-jacente. L'intempérie tropicale est un processus prolongé d'intempéries chimiques qui produit une grande variété dans l'épaisseur, la qualité, la chimie et la minéralogie minérale des sols résultants. La majorité de la zone terrestre contenant des latérites se situe entre les tropiques du Cancer et Capricorne. Historiquement, la latérite a été coupée en formes de briques et utilisée dans la construction de monuments. Après 1000 EC, la construction à Angkor Wat et d'autres sites du sud-est asiatique a changé en enclos de temple rectangulaires en latérite, en brique et en pierre. Depuis le milieu des années 1970, certaines sections d'essai de routes bitumineuses et à faible volume ont utilisé la latérite à la place de la pierre comme base. Les couches épaisses de lateite sont poreuses et légèrement perméables, de sorte que les couches peuvent fonctionner comme aquifères dans les zones rurales. Les latérites localement disponibles ont été utilisées dans une solution acide, suivies de précipitations pour éliminer le phosphore et les métaux lourds dans les installations de traitement des eaux usées.

Laterites are soil types rich in iron and aluminium, formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are rusty-red because of iron oxides. They develop by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the underlying parent rock. Tropical weathering is a prolonged process of chemical weathering which produces a wide variety in the thickness, grade, chemistry and ore mineralogy of the resulting soils. The majority of the land area containing laterites is between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Historically, laterite was cut into brick-like shapes and used in monument-building. After 1000 CE, construction at Angkor Wat and other southeast Asian sites changed to rectangular temple enclosures made of laterite, brick and stone. Since the mid-1970s, some trial sections of bituminous-surfaced, low-volume roads have used laterite in place of stone as a base course. Thick laterite layers are porous and slightly permeable, so the layers can function as aquifers in rural areas. Locally available laterites have been used in an acid solution, followed by precipitation to remove phosphorus and heavy metals at sewage-treatment facilities.
