Linear A est l'un des deux systèmes d'écriture actuellement non déchiffrés utilisés dans la Crète ancienne. Cretan jeroglyphique est l'autre. L'A linéaire était le script principal utilisé dans le palais et les écrits religieux de la civilisation minoenne. Il a été découvert par l'archéologue Arthur Evans. C'est l'origine du script Linear B, qui a ensuite été utilisé par la civilisation mycénienne. Dans les années 1950, le B linéaire a été en grande partie déchiffré et s'est avéré coder une forme antérieure de grec. Bien que les deux systèmes partagent de nombreux symboles, cela n'a pas abouti à un déchiffrement ultérieur de Linear A. L'utilisation des valeurs associées au Linear B dans Linear A produit principalement des mots inintelligibles. Si elle utilise les mêmes valeurs syllabiques similaires que Linear B, alors sa langue sous-jacente apparaît sans lien avec une langue connue. Cela a été surnommé la langue minoenne.
