Louis XVIII de France
Louis XVIII, connu sous le nom de «le désiré», était un monarque de la maison de Bourbon qui régnait comme roi de France et de Navarre de 1814 à 1824, sauf pour une période de 1815 connue sous le nom de cent jours. Louis XVIII a passé vingt-trois ans en exil, de 1791 à 1814, pendant la Révolution française et le Premier Empire français, et encore en 1815, pendant la période des Cent-jours, au retour de Napoléon I d'Elbe. Jusqu'à son accession au trône de France, Louis a occupé le titre de comte de Provence en tant que frère du roi Louis XVI. Le 21 septembre 1792, la Convention nationale abolit la monarchie et déposa le roi Louis XVI, qui fut plus tard exécuté par la guillotine. Lorsque le jeune Louis XVII, fils de Louis XVI, est mort en prison en juin 1795, Louis XVIII succède à son neveu en tant que roi titulaire. Pendant la Révolution française et l'ère napoléonienne, Louis XVIII a vécu en exil en Prusse, au Royaume-Uni et en Russie. Lorsque la Sixième Coalition a finalement vaincu Napoléon en 1814, Louis a été rétabli à ce que lui et les royalistes français considéraient comme la position légitime. Napoléon s'est évadé de son exil à Elbe, mais a restauré son Empire français.
