Lugworm
Le lugou ou le ver de sable, Arenicola marina, est un grand ver marin du phylum Annelida. Ses pièces enroulées sont une vue familière sur une plage à marée basse, mais l'animal lui-même est rarement vu, sauf par ceux qui, par curiosité ou comme appât de pêche, creusent le ver dans le sable. Lorsqu'il est pleinement cultivé, le lugworm des côtes d'Europe mesure jusqu'à 9 pouces de long et 3/8 de diamètre. D'autres espèces de la côte nord-américaine se situent entre 3 et 12 pouces. Le corps est comme celui d'un ver de terre: anneau ou segmenté. Sa tête, qui est rouge noirâtre et ne porte pas de tentacules ni de poils, passe dans une partie centrale plus grosse qui est rouge. Ceci à son tour se transforme en une extrémité plus fine de la queue jaune-jaunes. La partie centrale a des poils sur ses côtés et aussi des paires de branchies plumeuses. Il existe un système bien développé de vaisseaux sanguins avec du sang rouge riche en pigments porteurs d'oxygène, l'hémoglobine.
