Dans les mathématiques récréatives, un carré magique est un arrangement de nombres distincts, habituellement des nombres entiers, dans une grille carrée, où les nombres dans chaque rangée, et dans chaque colonne, et les nombres dans les diagonales principales vers l'avant et vers l'arrière, s'ajoutent à la même nombre. Un carré magique a le même nombre de lignes qu'il a des colonnes, et dans la notation mathématique conventionnelle, "n" représente le nombre de lignes qu'il possède. Ainsi, un carré magique contient toujours des numéros n2, et sa taille est décrite comme étant "de l'ordre n". Un carré magique qui contient les nombres entiers de 1 à n2 s'appelle un carré magique normal. Il est possible de construire un carré magique normal de n'importe quelle taille, sauf 2 × 2, bien que la solution à un carré magique où n = 1 est banal, puisqu'il consiste simplement en une seule cellule contenant le nombre 1. Le plus petit cas non triviale, montré Ci-dessous, est une grille 3 × 3. La constante qui est la somme de chaque rangée, colonne et diagonale s'appelle la constante magique ou la somme magique, M.
