Dans les statistiques, l'estimation de la vraisemblance maximale est une méthode d'estimation des paramètres d'un modèle statistique. Lorsqu'il est appliqué à un ensemble de données et donné un modèle statistique, l'estimation de la vraisemblance maximale fournit des estimations pour les paramètres du modèle. La méthode de vraisemblance maximale correspond à de nombreuses méthodes d'estimation bien connues dans les statistiques. Par exemple, on peut s'intéresser aux hauteurs des manchots adultes, mais être incapable de mesurer la hauteur de chaque pingouin dans une population en raison de contraintes de coûts ou de temps. En supposant que les hauteurs sont normalement réparties avec une moyenne et une variance inconnue, la moyenne et la variance peuvent être estimées avec MLE tout en connaissant seulement les hauteurs d'un échantillon de la population globale. MLE accomplira ceci en prenant la moyenne et la variance comme paramètres et en trouvant des valeurs paramétriques particulières qui rendent les résultats observés les plus probables. En général, pour un ensemble fixe de données et un modèle statistique sous-jacent, la méthode de maximum de vraisemblance sélectionne l'ensemble des valeurs des paramètres du modèle qui maximisent la fonction de vraisemblance.
