Microcode
Microcode est une couche d'instructions de niveau matériel ou de structures de données impliquées dans la mise en œuvre d'instructions de code de machine de niveau supérieur dans des unités de traitement centrales et dans la mise en œuvre de la logique interne de nombreux contrôleurs de canaux, contrôleurs de disques, contrôleurs d'interface de réseau, processeurs de réseau, Unités de traitement graphique et autres matériels. Il réside dans une mémoire spéciale haute vitesse et traduit les instructions de la machine en séquences d'opérations détaillées au niveau du circuit. Il aide à séparer les instructions de la machine de l'électronique sous-jacente afin que les instructions puissent être conçues et modifiées plus librement. Il est également possible de construire des instructions multi-étapes complexes tout en réduisant la complexité des circuits électroniques par rapport à d'autres méthodes. L'écriture de microcode est souvent appelée microprogrammation et le microcode dans une implémentation particulière de processeur est parfois appelé microprogramme. Le microcode moderne est normalement écrit par un ingénieur pendant la phase de conception du processeur et stocké dans une structure ROM ou PLA, ou une combinaison des deux. Cependant, des machines existent également qui ont un microcode stocké dans SRAM ou une mémoire flash.
