Le Mont Saint-Michel est une commune insulaire en Normandie, en France. Il est situé à environ un kilomètre de la côte nord-ouest du pays, à l'embouchure de la rivière Couesnon près d'Avranches. Superficie de 100 hectares, l'île a une population de 44 habitants. L'île a tenu des fortifications stratégiques depuis l'Antiquité et, depuis le VIIIe siècle après JC, a été le siège du monastère dont elle tire son nom. La composition structurelle de la ville illustre la société féodale qui l'a construit. En haut, Dieu, l'abbaye et le monastère, en dessous de ces grandes salles, des magasins et des logements, et en bas, à l'extérieur des murs, des pêcheurs et des maisons d'agriculteurs. Sa position unique d'être une île à seulement 600 mètres de la terre l'a rendu facilement accessible en marée basse aux nombreux pèlerins de son abbaye. De même, cette position le rendait facilement défendable, car une marée entrante échouée, ou noyée, serait des assaillants.
