Morphométrie
La morphométrie ou la morphométrie se réfère à l'analyse quantitative de la forme, un concept qui englobe la taille et la forme. Les analyses morphométriques sont généralement effectuées sur des organismes et sont utiles pour analyser leur bilan fossile, l'impact des mutations sur la forme, les changements de développement de la forme, les covariances entre les facteurs écologiques et la forme, ainsi que pour estimer les paramètres génétiques quantitatifs de la forme. La morphométrie peut être utilisée pour quantifier un trait d'importance évolutive, et en détectant les changements de forme, déduisent quelque chose de leur ontogenèse, de leur fonction ou de leurs relations évolutives. Un objectif majeur de la morphométrie est de tester statistiquement les hypothèses sur les facteurs qui affectent la forme. La «morphométrie», au sens large du terme, est également utilisée pour localiser précisément certaines zones d'organes comme le cerveau et est utilisée pour décrire les formes d'autres choses.
