Paul Morphy
Paul Charles Morphy était un joueur d'échecs américain. Il est considéré comme le plus grand maître de l'échec de son époque et un Champion mondial d'échecs non officiel. Il était un prodige d'échecs. On l'appelait «La fierté et la douleur des échecs» parce qu'il avait une carrière d'échecs brève et brillante, mais s'est retiré du jeu alors qu'il était encore jeune. Morphy est né à New Orleans, en Louisiane, dans une famille riche et distinguée. Il a appris à jouer aux échecs en regardant simplement des jeux entre son père et son oncle. Sa famille a rapidement réalisé le talent du garçon et l'a encouragé à jouer à des rassemblements familiaux et, à l'âge de neuf ans, il a été considéré comme l'un des meilleurs joueurs de la Nouvelle-Orléans. À peine douze ans, Morphy a battu le maître hongrois Johann Löwenthal dans un match de trois matchs. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme en 1857, Morphy n'était pas encore plus âgé pour pratiquer la loi et se retrouva avec le temps libre. Il a reçu une invitation à jouer au First American Chess Congress à New York City et, à l'instar de son oncle, a accepté. Morphy a remporté le tournoi qui comprenait des joueurs forts de la journée, tels que Alexander Meek et Louis Paulsen.
