Mountbatten est le nom de famille initialement adopté par une branche de la famille Battenberg pendant la Première Guerre mondiale en raison du sentiment anti-allemand croissant chez le public britannique. Le 14 juillet 1917, le prince Louis de Battenberg prit le nom de famille Mountbatten pour lui-même et ses descendants et fut créé marquis de Milford Haven. Le nom est une anglicisation du Battenberg allemand, une petite ville de Hesse. Le titre de comte de Battenberg, plus tard prince de Battenberg, a été accordé à une branche morganatique de la Maison de Hesse-Darmstadt au milieu du 19ème siècle. Le prince Philip de Grèce et le Danemark, le consortium de la reine Elizabeth II, ont adopté le nom de famille de Mountbatten de la famille de sa mère en 1947, bien qu'il soit membre de la Maison de Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg par descendance patrilinéaire.
