Le néoplatonisme est un terme moderne utilisé pour désigner une tradition de philosophie qui est apparue au IIIe siècle après JC et persista jusqu'à peu de temps après la fermeture de l'Académie platonicienne à Athènes en 529 av. J.-C. par Justinien I. Les néoplatonistes ont été fortement influencés à la fois par Platon et par le platonicien Tradition qui a prospéré pendant les six siècles qui ont séparé le premier des néoplatonistes de Platon. Collectivement, les néoplatonistes ont constitué une tradition continue de philosophes qui a commencé avec Plotin. L'un des traits caractéristiques du système de Plotin, qui a été repris par les néoplatonistes suivants, est la doctrine de «l'un» au-delà de l'être. Pour Plotin, le premier principe de la réalité est une subsistance totalement simple, ineffable et inconnaissable qui est à la fois la source créative et la fin téléologique de toutes les choses existantes. Bien que, à proprement parler, il n'y ait aucun nom approprié pour le premier principe, les noms les plus adéquats sont «l'un» ou «le bon». L'un est si simple qu'il ne peut même pas dire qu'il existe ou qu'il y a un être.

Neoplatonism is a modern term used to designate a tradition of philosophy that arose in the 3rd century AD and persisted until shortly after the closing of the Platonic Academy in Athens in AD 529 by Justinian I. Neoplatonists were heavily influenced both by Plato and by the Platonic tradition that thrived during the six centuries which separated the first of the Neoplatonists from Plato. Collectively, the Neoplatonists constituted a continuous tradition of philosophers which began with Plotinus. One of the characteristic features of Plotinus' system, which was also taken up by subsequent Neoplatonists, is the doctrine of "the One" beyond being. For Plotinus, the first principle of reality is an utterly simple, ineffable, unknowable subsistence which is both the creative source and the teleological end of all existing things. Although, properly speaking, there is no name appropriate for the first principle, the most adequate names are "the One" or "the Good". The One is so simple that it cannot even be said to exist or to be a being.
