Diabète mellitus de type 2
Le diabète sucré de type 2 (diabète anti-diabétiques non insulino-dépendant (NIDDM) ou diabète adulte) est un trouble métabolique qui se caractérise par une hyperglycémie (glycémie élevée) dans le contexte de la résistance à l'insuline et du manque relatif d'insuline. Cela contraste avec le diabète sucré de type 1, dans lequel il existe un manque absolu d'insuline dû à la dégradation des cellules d'îlots dans le pancréas. Les symptômes classiques sont la soif excessive, la miction fréquente et la faim constante. Le diabète de type 2 représente environ 90% des cas de diabète, les autres 10% liés principalement au diabète sucré de type 1 et au diabète gestationnel. L'obésité est considérée comme la principale cause du diabète de type 2 chez les personnes qui sont génétiquement prédisposées à la maladie. Le diabète de type 2 est initialement géré par l'augmentation de l'exercice et des changements alimentaires. Si les doses de glycémie ne sont pas abaissées de manière adéquate par ces mesures, des médicaments tels que la metformine ou l'insuline peuvent être nécessaires. Chez ceux qui sont à l'insuline, il existe habituellement l'obligation de vérifier systématiquement les taux de glycémie. Les taux de diabète de type 2 ont considérablement augmenté depuis 1960 en parallèle avec l'obésité.
