Les composés nitro sont des composés organiques qui contiennent un ou plusieurs groupes fonctionnels nitro. Ils sont souvent très explosifs, surtout lorsque le composé contient plus d'un groupe nitro et est impur. Le groupe nitro est l'un des explosifs les plus courants utilisés globalement. Cette propriété des groupes nitro et nitrate est parce que leur décomposition thermique produit des gaz N2 d'azote moléculaire plus une énergie considérable, en raison de la forte résistance de la liaison dans l'azote moléculaire. Les composés nitro aromatiques sont typiquement synthétisés par l'action d'un mélange d'acides nitrique et sulfurique sur une molécule organique. L'un produit sur la plus grande échelle, de loin, est le nitrobenzène. De nombreux explosifs sont produits par la nitration, y compris le trinitrophénol, le trinitrotoluène et le trinitrésorcinol.
