Dans les nombreux domaines concernés par l'interactivité, y compris les sciences de l'information, l'informatique, l'interaction homme-ordinateur, la communication et le design industriel, il y a peu d'accord sur le sens du terme interactivité. Comme le suffixe 'ity' est utilisé pour former des noms qui désignent une qualité ou une condition, cette recherche a défini l'interactivité comme «qualité ou condition d'interaction». Ces chercheurs suggèrent que la distinction entre l'interaction et l'interactivité est importante, car l'interaction peut être présente dans un cadre donné, mais la qualité de l'interaction varie de bas et de haut.
