Nubie
La Nubie est une région le long du Nil, située dans le nord du Soudan et le sud de l'Égypte. Il y a eu un certain nombre de grands royaumes de Nubie tout au long de l'ère postclassique, dont le dernier s'est effondré en 1504, lorsque Nubie s'est divisée entre l'Egypte et le sultanat de Sennar, ce qui a entraîné l'arabisation d'une grande partie de la population nubienne. La Nubie a de nouveau été unie dans l'Égypte ottomane au 19ème siècle et au sein du Soudan anglo-égyptien de 1899 à 1956. Le nom Nubia est dérivé de celui du peuple Noba, les nomades qui ont installé la région au 4ème siècle, avec l'effondrement de la Royaume de Meroë. La Noba a parlé une langue nilo-saharienne, ancestrale au Vieux Nubien. Le vieux Nubien était surtout utilisé dans les textes religieux datant des 8ème et 15ème siècles après J.-C. Avant le 4ème siècle, et tout au long de l'antiquité classique, Nubia était connue sous le nom de Kush, ou, dans l'usage grec classique, inclus sous le nom d'Éthiopie. Historiquement, les habitants de Nubie ont parlé au moins deux variétés du groupe de langue nubienne, une sous-famille qui comprend Nobiin, Kenuzi-Dongola, Midob et plusieurs variétés apparentées dans la partie nord des Monts Nuba, dans le sud du Kordofan.
