Oligodendrocyte
Les oligodendrocytes, ou oligodendroglia, sont un type de neuroglie. Leurs fonctions principales sont de fournir un soutien et une isolation aux axones dans le système nerveux central de certains vertébrés, ce qui équivaut à la fonction de cellules de Schwann dans le système nerveux périphérique. Les oligodendrocytes le font en créant la gaine de myéline, qui est à 80% de lipides et 20% de protéines. Un seul oligodendrocyte peut étendre ses processus à 50 axones, enveloppant environ 1 μm de gaine de myéline autour de chaque axone; Les cellules de Schwann, d'autre part, ne peuvent envelopper qu'un seul axone. Chaque oligodendrocyte forme un segment de myéline pour plusieurs axones adjacents.
