Orcein, aussi archil, orchil, lacmus et C.I. Naturel Rouge 28, sont des noms pour les colorants extraits de plusieurs espèces de lichens, communément appelées «herbes orchelles», trouvées dans diverses parties du monde. Une source majeure est l'archil lichen, Roccella tinctoria. Orcinol est extrait de ces lichens. Il est ensuite transformé en orceine par de l'ammoniaque et de l'air. Dans les méthodes traditionnelles de fabrication de colorants, l'urine a été utilisée comme source d'ammoniac. Si la conversion est effectuée en présence de carbonate de potassium, d'hydroxyde de calcium et de sulfate de calcium, le résultat est une molécule décisive, plus complexe. La fabrication a été décrite par Cocq en 1812 et au Royaume-Uni en 1874.
