Ostracoderms se réfère aux poissons blindés sans mâchoires du Paléozoïque. Le terme n'apparait pas souvent dans les classifications aujourd'hui parce qu'il est paraphylétique ou polyphylétique et n'a pas de signification phylogénétique. Cependant, le terme est encore utilisé comme un moyen informel de regrouper les poissons blindés sans mâchoires. Une innovation des ostracodermes était l'utilisation de branchies non pour l'alimentation, mais exclusivement pour la respiration. Les premiers accords avec des branchies les utilisaient pour la respiration et l'alimentation. Les ostracodermes possédaient des sachets de mollusque pharyngés séparés le long de la tête, ouverts en permanence sans operculum protecteur. Contrairement aux invertébrés qui utilisent des mouvements ciliés pour déplacer des aliments, les ostracodermes ont utilisé leur pharynx musculaire pour créer une aspiration qui a poussé des proies petites et lentement en mouvement dans leur bouche. Les premiers poissons fossiles découverts étaient les ostracodermes. L'anatomiste suisse Louis Agassiz a reçu des fossiles de poissons blindés osseux d'Ecosse dans les années 1830. Il a eu du mal à les classer car ils ne ressemblaient à aucun être vivant.

Ostracoderms refers to the armored jawless fishes of the Paleozoic. The term does not often appear in classifications today because it is paraphyletic or polyphyletic, and has no phylogenetic meaning. However, the term is still used as an informal way of loosely grouping together the armored jawless fishes. An innovation of ostracoderms was the use of gills not for feeding, but exclusively for respiration. Earlier chordates with gills used them for both respiration and feeding. Ostracoderms had separate pharyngeal gill pouches along the side of the head, which were permanently open with no protective operculum. Unlike invertebrates that use ciliated motion to move food, ostracoderms used their muscular pharynx to create a suction that pulled small and slow moving prey into their mouths. The first fossil fishes that were discovered were ostracoderms. The Swiss anatomist Louis Agassiz received some fossils of bony armored fish from Scotland in the 1830s. He had a hard time classifying them as they did not resemble any living creature.
