Les planètes extérieures sont ces planètes dans le système solaire au-delà de la ceinture d'astéroïdes et se réfèrent donc aux géants du gaz qui sont en ordre de leur distance par rapport au Soleil: ▪ Jupiter est la plus grande planète du système solaire. Il dispose de quatre satellites très volumineux. ▪ Saturne est la deuxième plus grande planète, avec un système à anneaux large et lumineux. ▪ Uranus est la troisième plus grande planète et la plus modeste des quatre planètes extérieures. Il est incliné presque sur l'avion de son orbite. ▪ Neptune est la plus petite des quatre planètes extérieures. Il a une grande lune rétrograde et beaucoup de petites. Les planètes extérieures ont tous des systèmes d'anneaux, bien que tous sauf Saturne soient faibles. Un autre aspect commun aux géants du gaz est leurs nombreux satellites naturels, dont deux sont plus grands que la planète Mercury. Cette paire et Io, Callisto, Europa et Triton, sont plus grandes que Pluton et Eris. Cette région de l'espace est également occupée par des centaures, divers champs de chevaux de Troie et de nombreuses comètes. Pluton a été considérée comme une planète extérieure depuis sa découverte en 1930 jusqu'à son reclassement en tant que planète nain en 2006.
