La pénologie est une partie de la criminologie qui traite de la philosophie et de la pratique de diverses sociétés dans leurs tentatives de réprimer les activités criminelles et satisfaire l'opinion publique par un régime de traitement approprié pour les personnes reconnues coupables d'infraction pénale. Il englobe également les aspects de la probation et de la science pénitentiaire relatifs à la détention sécurisée et au recyclage des délinquants engagés dans des établissements sécurisés. La pénombre concerne de nombreux thèmes et théories, y compris ceux concernant les prisons, ainsi que les théories de la punition. La péninsule contemporaine concerne principalement la réadaptation criminelle et la gestion des prisons.
