Stéthoscope
Le stéthoscope est un dispositif médical acoustique pour l'auscultation, ou l'écoute des sons internes d'un animal ou d'un corps humain. Il est souvent utilisé pour écouter des sons pulmonaires et cardiaques. Il est également utilisé pour écouter les intestins et le flux sanguin dans les artères et les veines. En combinaison avec un sphygmomanomètre, il est couramment utilisé pour mesurer la tension artérielle. Moins fréquemment, les «stéthoscopes mécaniques» sont utilisés pour écouter des sons internes fabriqués par des machines, comme le diagnostic d'un moteur automobile défectueux en écoutant les sons de ses parties internes. Les stéthoscopes peuvent également être utilisés pour vérifier la présence de fuites dans les chambres scientifiques sous vide et pour diverses autres tâches de surveillance acoustique à petite échelle. Un stéthoscope qui intensifie les sons auscultants s'appelle phonendoscope.
