Pinnipède
Les pinnipèdes, généralement généralisés sous forme de phoques, constituent un clade largement répandu et diversifié de mammifères marins semiaquatiques à pattes fines. Ils comprennent les familles existantes Odobenidae, Otariidae et Phocidae. Il existe 33 espèces de pinnipèdes existantes et plus de 50 espèces éteintes ont été décrites à partir de fossiles. Bien que les phoques aient été historiquement descendus de deux lignes ancestrales, les preuves moléculaires les soutiennent comme une lignée monophylétique. Les pinnipèdes appartiennent à l'ordre Carnivora et leurs parents vivants les plus proches sont des ours et des musteloïdes. Les phoques sont de taille allant du sceau de Baalal de 1 m et 45 kg au phoque d'éléphant du sud de 5 m et 3,200 kg, qui est également le plus grand carnivorien. Plusieurs espèces présentent un dimorphisme sexuel. Ils ont des corps simplifiés et quatre membres qui sont modifiés en palmes. Bien que pas aussi rapide dans l'eau que les dauphins, les phoques sont plus souples et plus agiles. Les Otariides utilisent leurs membres avant principalement pour se propulser dans l'eau, tandis que les phocides et les morses utilisent leurs membres postérieurs. Les otariides et les morses ont des membres postérieurs qui peuvent être tirés sous le corps et utilisés comme jambes sur terre.
