Polygraphe
Un polygraphe mesure et enregistre plusieurs indices physiologiques tels que la pression sanguine, le pouls, la respiration et la conductivité de la peau pendant que le sujet est posé et répond à une série de questions. La croyance qui sous-tend l'utilisation du polygraphe est que les réponses trompeuses produiront des réponses physiologiques qui peuvent être différenciées de celles associées à des réponses non trompeuses. Le polygraphe a été inventé en 1921 par John Augustus Larson, un étudiant en médecine à l'Université de Californie à Berkeley et un agent de police du Département de police de Berkeley à Berkeley, en Californie. Selon Encyclopædia Britannica, le polygraphe était sur sa liste de 2003 des plus grandes inventions, décrites par la société comme des inventions qui «ont eu des effets profonds sur la vie humaine pour le meilleur ou pour le pire». L'efficacité des polygraphes est débattue dans la communauté scientifique. En 2001, une fraction importante de la communauté scientifique considérait la polygraphie comme une pseudoscience. En 2002, un examen par les National Academies of Science a révélé que, dans les populations sans formation dans les contre-mesures, les tests de polygraphie peuvent discriminer le mensonge de la vérité à des taux supérieurs au hasard, bien que sous la perfection.
