Réacteur à eau pressurisée
Les réacteurs à eau pressurisée constituent la grande majorité de toutes les centrales nucléaires de l'Ouest et constituent l'un des trois types de réacteurs à eau légère, les autres étant des réacteurs à eau bouillante et des réacteurs à eau supercritique. Dans un PWR, le liquide de refroidissement primaire est pompé sous haute pression sur le noyau du réacteur où il est chauffé par l'énergie générée par la fission d'atomes. L'eau chauffée s'écoule ensuite vers un générateur de vapeur où elle transfère son énergie thermique vers un système secondaire où la vapeur est générée et s'écoule vers des turbines qui, à leur tour, font tourner un générateur électrique. Contrairement à un réacteur à eau bouillante, la pression dans la boue de refroidissement primaire empêche l'eau d'ébullition dans le réacteur. Tous les LWR utilisent l'eau ordinaire comme modérateur de refroidissement et de neutrons. Les PWR ont été initialement conçus pour servir de propulsion nucléaire pour les sous-marins nucléaires et ont été utilisés dans la conception originale de la deuxième centrale électrique commerciale de la centrale hydroélectrique de Shipport Atomic. Les PWR actuellement en activité aux États-Unis sont considérés comme des réacteurs de la génération II. Les réacteurs VVER de la Russie sont semblables aux PWR des États-Unis. La France exploite de nombreux PWR pour générer la majeure partie de son électricité.
