Progestatif
Les progestatifs sont un groupe d'hormones stéroïdes. Le progestatif le plus important dans le corps est la progestérone. D'autres progestatifs endogènes comprennent la 17-hydroxyprogestérone, la 5α-dihydroprogesterone et la 11-désoxycorticostérone. Les progestatifs sont l'une des cinq principales classes d'hormones stéroïdiennes, en plus des oestrogènes, des androgènes, des minéralocorticoïdes et des glucocorticoïdes. Tous les progestatifs sont caractérisés par leur squelette basique de 21 carottes, appelé squelette de la pregnane. De manière similaire, les œstrogènes possèdent un squelette et des androgènes d'estrane, un squelette d'andrane. Les progestatifs sont nommés pour leur fonction dans le maintien de la grossesse, même s'ils sont également présents à d'autres phases des cycles de l'etre et des menstruations. La classe d'hormones de progestatif comprend tous les stéroïdes avec un squelette de grossesse, c'est-à-dire tous deux naturels et synthétiques. Les hormones exogènes ou synthétiques sont habituellement appelées progestines.
