Serpent de rat
Les serpents de rat sont des constricteurs moyens à grands trouvés dans une grande partie de l'hémisphère nord. Ils se nourrissent principalement de rongeurs et d'oiseaux. Avec certaines espèces de plus de 3 m de longueur totale, elles peuvent occuper les meilleurs niveaux de certaines chaînes alimentaires. De nombreuses espèces font des animaux attrayants et dociles, et l'un, le serpent de maïs, est l'un des animaux de reptiles les plus populaires au monde. D'autres espèces peuvent être très esthétiques et parfois agressives, mais les piqûres sont rarement graves. Comme presque tous les colubrides, les serpents de rat ne constituent pas une menace pour les humains. On croyait longtemps que les serpents de rat étaient complètement nonvenus, mais des études récentes ont montré que certaines espèces du Vieux Monde possèdent de petites quantités de venin. Auparavant, la plupart des serpents de rat ont été affectés au genre Elaphe, mais beaucoup ont été renommés suite à une analyse de l'ADN mitochondrial effectuée en 2002. Aux fins de cet article, les noms seront harmonisés avec la base de données TIGR.
