Osmose inverse
L'osmose inverse est une technologie de purification d'eau qui utilise une membrane semi-perméable. Cette technologie de membrane n'est pas correctement une méthode de filtration. En osmose inverse, une pression appliquée est utilisée pour surmonter la pression osmotique, une propriété colligative, entraînée par le potentiel chimique, un paramètre thermodynamique. L'osmose inverse peut éliminer de nombreux types de molécules et d'ions à partir de solutions et est utilisée à la fois dans les procédés industriels et la production d'eau potable. Le résultat est que le soluté est retenu sur le côté sous pression de la membrane et le solvant pur est autorisé à passer de l'autre côté. Pour être «sélectif», cette membrane ne doit pas permettre de grandes molécules ou des ions à travers les pores, mais devrait permettre à des composants plus petits de la solution de passer librement. Dans le processus d'osmose normale, le solvant se déplace naturellement d'une zone de faible concentration de soluté, à travers une membrane, jusqu'à une zone de concentration élevée en soluté. Le mouvement d'un solvant pur est conduit à réduire l'énergie libre du système en égalisant les concentrations de soluté de chaque côté d'une membrane, générant une pression osmotique.
