L'ingénierie aérospatiale est la branche primaire de l'ingénierie concernée par la recherche, la conception, le développement, la construction, les essais, la science et la technologie des aéronefs et des engins spatiaux. Il est divisé en deux branches principales et chevauchantes: l'ingénierie aéronautique et l'ingénierie astronautique. L'aéronautique traite des avions qui opèrent dans l'atmosphère terrestre, et l'astronautique traite des engins spatiaux qui fonctionnent en dehors de l'atmosphère terrestre. L'ingénierie aérospatiale traite de la conception, de la construction et de l'étude de la science derrière les forces et les propriétés physiques des avions, des roquettes, des engins volants et des engins spatiaux. Le champ couvre également leurs caractéristiques et comportements aérodynamiques, les ailes, les surfaces de contrôle, l'élévation, la traînée et d'autres propriétés. L'ingénierie aéronautique était le terme original pour le terrain.
