La caractéristique principale qui distingue la méthode scientifique d'autres méthodes d'acquisition de connaissances est que les scientifiques cherchent à laisser la réalité parler d'elle-même, en soutenant une théorie lorsque les prédictions d'une théorie sont confirmées et mettent au défi une théorie lorsque ses prédictions se révèlent fausses. Bien que les procédures varient d'un domaine d'enquête à l'autre, les caractéristiques identifiables distinguent la recherche scientifique des autres méthodes d'obtention de connaissances.
