Selenodont
Les dents de Selenodont sont le type de molaires et prémolaires couramment trouvés dans les herbivores de ruminants. Ils sont caractérisés par de faibles couronnes et des cuspides en forme de croissant lorsqu'elles sont vues de dessus. Le terme provient des racines grecques, et est odieux. Ils diffèrent des molaires humaines en ce sens que la surface occlusale n'est pas couverte d'émail; Plutôt, les couches d'émail, de dentine et de cément sont exposées, avec du cément au milieu, entourées d'une couche d'émail, puis d'une couche de dentine, toutes enveloppées dans une seconde couche extérieure d'émail. Vu de côté, les dents de selenodont forment une série de cuspides triangulaires. La combinaison de profils triangulaires avec des arêtes formées par les couches exposées fait de la mâchoire latérale des ruminants un moyen efficace de décomposer les matières végétales difficiles.
