Le lien sexuel est l'expression phénotypique d'un allèle lié au sexe chromosomique de l'individu. Ce mode d'héritage contraste avec l'héritage des traits sur les chromosomes autosomiques, où les deux sexes ont la même probabilité d'héritage. Puisque les humains ont beaucoup plus de gènes sur le X que le Y, il existe beaucoup plus de traits liés au X que les traits liés à Y. Chez les mammifères, la femelle est le sexe homogametique, avec deux chromosomes X, tandis que le mâle est hétérogametique, avec un X et un chromosome Y. Les gènes sur le chromosome X ou Y s'appellent sex-linked. Chez les oiseaux, le contraire est vrai: le mâle est le sexe homogametique, ayant deux chromosomes Z, et la femelle est hétérogametique, ayant un chromosome Z et un W. Les traits récessifs liés à la X sont exprimés dans tous les hétérogametiques, mais ne sont exprimés que dans les homogames qui sont homozygotes pour l'allèle récessif. Par exemple, un allèle récessif lié au X chez les humains provoque une hémophilie. L'hémophilie est beaucoup plus fréquente chez les hommes que chez les femmes, car les mâles sont hémizyques - ils ont seulement une copie du gène en question - et donc expriment le trait lorsqu'ils héritent d'un allèle mutant.
