Un bidonville est une colonie informelle urbaine fortement peuplée caractérisée par un logement et une misère médiocre. Alors que les bidonvilles diffèrent en taille et autres caractéristiques d'un pays à l'autre, la plupart ne disposent pas de services d'assainissement fiables, d'approvisionnement en eau propre, d'électricité fiable, d'application rapide de la loi et d'autres services de base. Les résidences de bidonvilles varient d'une maison à l'autre à des logements construits par des professionnels qui, en raison d'un design ou d'une construction de mauvaise qualité, se sont détériorés en quartiers fauniques. Les bidonvilles étaient communs au 19ème et au début du 20ème siècle aux États-Unis et en Europe. Plus récemment, les bidonvilles ont été trouvés principalement dans les régions urbaines des régions en développement et non développées du monde, mais se retrouvent également dans les économies développées. Selon UN-HABITAT, environ 33% de la population urbaine du monde en développement en 2012, soit environ 863 millions de personnes, vivait dans les bidonvilles. La proportion de la population urbaine vivant dans les bidonvilles était la plus élevée en Afrique subsaharienne, suivie de l'Asie du Sud, de l'Asie du Sud, de l'Asie de l'Est, de l'Asie de l'Ouest, de l'Océanie, de l'Amérique latine et des Caraïbes et de l'Afrique du Nord.
