Les compétences douces sont souvent associées au «QE» d'une personne, à l'ensemble des traits de personnalité, des grâces sociales, de la communication, du langage, des habitudes personnelles, de la convivialité et de l'optimisme qui caractérisent les relations avec d'autres personnes. Les compétences douces complètent les compétences difficiles qui sont les exigences professionnelles d'un emploi et de nombreuses autres activités. Ils sont liés aux sentiments, aux émotions, aux idées et à une «connaissance interne»: c'est-à-dire qu'ils fournissent un complément important aux «compétences difficiles» et au QI. L'EQ de compétences douces d'une personne est une partie importante de leur contribution individuelle à la réussite d'une organisation. En particulier, les organisations qui traitent les clients face à face sont généralement plus efficaces si elles forment leur personnel pour utiliser ces compétences. Le dépistage ou la formation pour des habitudes ou des traits personnels tels que la fiabilité et la conscience peuvent générer un retour sur investissement important pour une organisation. Pour cette raison, les compétences douces sont de plus en plus recherchées par les employeurs en plus des qualifications standard. Il a été suggéré que dans un certain nombre de professions, les compétences douces peuvent être plus importantes sur le long terme que les compétences professionnelles.
