Les îles Salomon
Les îles Salomon sont un pays souverain composé d'un grand nombre d'îles en Océanie situées à l'est de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée et au nord-ouest du Vanuatu et couvrant une superficie de 28 400 kilomètres carrés. La capitale du pays, Honiara, est située sur l'île de Guadalcanal. Les îles Salomon ne doivent pas être confondues avec l'archipel des Îles Salomon, qui est une collection d'îles mélanésiennes qui comprend les îles Salomon et Bougainville. Les îles ont été habitées pendant des milliers d'années. En 1568, le navigateur espagnol Álvaro de Mendaña fut le premier européen à les visiter, en les nommant les Islas Salomón. En 1893, le Royaume-Uni avait établi un protectorat sur le territoire. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la campagne des Îles Salomon a vu des combats acharnés entre les États-Unis et l'Empire du Japon, comme dans la bataille de Guadalcanal. Le nom officiel du territoire britannique de l'époque a été changé de «Protectorat des Îles Salomon britanniques» en «Îles Salomon» en 1975. L'autonomie gouvernementale a été réalisée en 1976. L'indépendance a été obtenue deux ans plus tard.
