Le Schutzstaffel (prononciation allemande: (écouter), traduit à l'escadron de protection ou au corps de défense, abrégé SS-ou avec des runes stylisées "Armanen") était une organisation paramilitaire majeure sous Adolf Hitler et le parti nazi (NSDAP). Il a commencé à la fin de 1920 en tant que petite unité permanente de garde connue sous le nom de «Saal-Schutz» (Hall-Protection) composée de bénévoles du NSDAP pour assurer la sécurité des réunions du parti nazi à Munich. Plus tard, en 1925, Heinrich Himmler a rejoint l'unité, qui avait alors été réformée et renommée «Schutz-Staffel». Sous le leadership d'Himmler (1929-1945), il est passé d'une petite formation paramilitaire à l'une des plus grandes et des plus puissantes organisations du Troisième Reich.
