Stegosauria
Connu de façon familière comme les stegosaures, la Stegosaurie est un groupe de dinosaures ornithischiens herbivores des périodes Jurassique et Crétacé précoce. La stgosaurie se retrouve principalement dans l'hémisphère nord, principalement dans ce qui est maintenant l'Amérique du Nord, l'Europe et la Chine. Kentrosaurus vivait en Afrique. Leur origine géographique n'est pas claire; Le premier stegosaur sans équivoque, Huayangosaurus, a été trouvé en Chine. Les stegosaures sont Thyreophora et ne diffèrent pas beaucoup des membres basaux de ce groupe, étant plutôt des petits animaux en course à bas prix, protégés par des scores blindés. Une innovation évolutive précoce a été l'utilisation de pointes de queue, ou "thagomizer", comme une arme à la défensive. Des espèces ultérieures, appartenant au sous-groupe des Stegosauridae, sont devenues plus grandes et ont développé de longs membres postérieurs qui ne pouvaient plus courir. Cela a augmenté l'importance de la défense active par le thagomizer, ce qui pourrait empêcher même les grands prédateurs theropod parce que la queue était dans une position haute, pointant horizontalement vers l'arrière du large bassin. Les stgosaurides avaient des arrays complexes de pointes verticales et de plaques osseuses qui couraient le dos, les hanches et les queues.
