Superstate
Un supermarché est une agglomération de nations et / ou d'états, souvent linguistiquement et ethniquement diversifiés, sous une seule structure politique-administrative. Ceci est distinct du concept de superpuissance, bien que ceux-ci soient fréquemment observés ensemble. Il est également distinct du concept d'empire, où une nation domine d'autres nations par le pouvoir militaire, politique et économique, comme dans l'Empire romain, bien qu'un empire soit aussi un supermarché, comme dans l'ancienne Perse, l'Empire russe, l'Inde et Chine. Un exemple d'un petit supermarché serait la république de Yougoslavie avant sa dissolution à la fin de la guerre froide. Un exemple d'ancien état-major serait la Chine, sous diverses dynasties. Les eurosceptiques soutiennent que l'Union européenne est un exemple actuel d'un supermarché émergent. Les États multinationaux comme le Canada et la Fédération de Russie ne sont pas considérés comme des superstats. L'ancienne Union soviétique, bien qu'elle soit définie constitutionnellement comme une union des républiques, était de facto un supermarché dû à une grande diversité culturelle et linguistique entre ses appartenances habitées, ne s'est jamais vraiment identifiée comme la nation soviétique unique malgré la doctrine officielle.
