Un exercice financier est une période utilisée pour calculer les états financiers annuels dans les entreprises et autres organisations. Dans de nombreuses juridictions, les lois réglementaires en matière de comptabilité et d'imposition exigent ces rapports une fois par douze mois, mais n'exigent pas que la période déclarée constitue une année civile. Les années fiscales varient selon les entreprises et les pays. L'année fiscale peut également se référer à l'année utilisée pour les déclarations d'impôt sur le revenu. Certaines entreprises choisissent de mettre fin à leur exercice financier le même jour de la semaine, ce jour étant le plus proche d'une date donnée. Dans un tel système, certains exercices financiers auront 52 semaines et d'autres 53 semaines. Les grandes entreprises qui adoptent cette approche incluent Cisco Systems. Néanmoins, l'année fiscale est identique à l'année civile pour environ 65% des entreprises cotées en bourse aux États-Unis et pour la majorité des grandes entreprises au Royaume-Uni et ailleurs. De nombreuses universités ont un exercice financier qui se termine pendant l'été, à la fois pour aligner l'année financière avec l'année scolaire et parce que l'école est habituellement moins occupée pendant les mois d'été. Dans l'hémisphère nord, c'est juillet d'une année à juin l'année prochaine.
