Emission thermodynamique
L'émission thermodynamique est le flux induit par la chaleur des porteurs de charge à partir d'une surface ou d'une barrière d'énergie potentielle. Cela se produit parce que l'énergie thermique donnée au transporteur surpasse le potentiel de liaison, également connu sous le nom de fonction de travail, du métal. Les porteurs de charge peuvent être des électrons ou des ions, et dans la littérature plus ancienne sont parfois appelés "thermones". Après l'émission, une charge égale en grandeur et en signe opposé à la charge totale émise est initialement laissée dans la région émettrice. Mais si l'émetteur est connecté à une batterie, la charge laissée derrière est neutralisée par la charge fournie par la batterie lorsque les supports de charge émis s'éloignent de l'émetteur et, finalement, l'émetteur sera dans le même état que précédemment. L'exemple classique de l'émission thermionique est l'émission d'électrons d'une cathode chaude dans un vide dans un tube à vide. La cathode chaude peut être un filament métallique, un filament métallique revêtu ou une structure distincte de métal ou de carbures ou de borures de métaux de transition. L'émission de vide des métaux tend à devenir significative uniquement pour des températures supérieures à 1000 K.
