Totalisme
Dans la musique, le totalisme est un terme pour un style de musique artistique qui est apparu dans les années 1980 et 1990 comme une réponse en développement au minimalisme - parallèle au postminimalisme, mais généralement chez une génération légèrement plus jeune, née dans les années 1950. Au début des années 1980, de nombreux jeunes compositeurs ont commencé à écrire de la musique dans les limites statiques du minimalisme, mais en utilisant une plus grande complexité rythmique, souvent avec deux ou plusieurs temps audibles à la fois. Le style a acquis un nom vers 1990, alors qu'il était évident pour les compositeurs travaillant dans la ville de New York qu'un certain nombre d'entre eux - John Luther Adams, Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Kyle Gann, Michael Gordon, Arthur Jarvinen, Diana Meckley, Ben Neill, Larry Polansky, Mikel Rouse, Evan Ziporyn, entre autres, employaient des structures de tempo globales similaires dans leur musique. Le terme totaliste se réfère aux objectifs de la musique, en essayant d'avoir suffisamment d'énergie rythmique de surface, mais aussi pour contenir une complexité de fond suffisante. Il y a aussi un écho dans le terme de «l'organisation totale» du sérialisme, tiré non pas de la ligne à 12 tons, mais des théories de Henry Cowell sur l'utilisation des mêmes dispositifs structurants pour le rythme traditionnellement utilisé pour le pitch.
