Uniformitarisme
L'uniformisme est l'hypothèse que les mêmes lois et processus naturels qui opèrent dans l'univers ont toujours fonctionné dans l'univers dans le passé et s'appliquent partout dans l'univers. Il a inclus le concept progressif selon lequel «le présent est la clé du passé» et fonctionne aux mêmes taux. L'uniformisme a été un principe clé de la géologie et pratiquement tous les domaines de la science, mais les géologues modernes du naturalisme, tout en acceptant que la géologie s'est produite dans les temps profonds, ne tiennent plus à un gradualisme strict. L'uniformisme, inventé par William Whewell, a été initialement proposé, contrairement à la catastrophe par les naturalistes britanniques à la fin du 18ème siècle, en commençant par le travail du géologue écossais James Hutton, raffiné par John Playfair et popularisé par les principes de géologie de Charles Lyell en 1830 .
