Les arts visuels sont des formes artistiques qui créent des œuvres principalement de nature visuelle, telles que la céramique, le dessin, la peinture, la sculpture, la gravure, le design, l'artisanat, la photographie, la vidéo, le cinéma et l'architecture. Ces définitions ne devraient pas être prises trop strictement car de nombreuses disciplines artistiques impliquent des aspects des arts visuels ainsi que des arts d'autres types. Les arts appliqués sont également inclus dans les arts visuels tels que le design industriel, le design graphique, le design de mode, le design d'intérieur et l'art décoratif. L'utilisation actuelle du terme «arts visuels» comprend les beaux-arts ainsi que les arts et métiers d'art appliqués, mais ce n'était pas toujours le cas. Avant le mouvement des arts et de l'artisanat en Grande-Bretagne et ailleurs à la fin du XXe siècle, le terme «artiste» était souvent limité à une personne travaillant dans les beaux-arts et non à l'artisanat, à l'artisanat ou aux arts appliqués. La distinction a été soulignée par les artistes du Mouvement des arts et de l'artisanat qui ont estimé les formes d'art vernaculaires autant que les formes élevées. Les écoles d'art ont fait une distinction entre les beaux-arts et les métiers en soutenant qu'un artisan ne pouvait être considéré comme un praticien des arts.
