Fer forgé
Le fer forgé est un alliage de fer à très faible teneur en carbone contrairement à la fonte, et a des inclusions fibreuses, connu sous le nom de scories jusqu'à 2% en poids. C'est une masse semi-fusionnée de fer avec des inclusions de laitier qui lui confère un «grain» ressemblant au bois, visible lorsqu'il est gravé ou plié au point d'échec. Le fer forgé est dur, malléable, ductile et facilement soudé. Avant le développement de méthodes efficaces de fabrication de l'acier et de la disponibilité de grandes quantités d'acier, le fer forgé était la forme la plus commune de fer malléable. Une quantité modeste de fer forgé a été utilisée comme matière première pour le raffinage en acier, qui a été utilisée principalement pour produire des épées, des couverts, des ciseaux, des axes et d'autres outils bordés, ainsi que des ressorts et des fichiers. La demande de fer forgé a atteint son apogée dans les années 1860 avec l'adaptation des navires de guerre et des chemins de fer, mais a diminué alors que des problèmes de qualité de l'acier doux tels que la fragilité ont été résolus et est devenu peu coûteux et largement disponible.
