Xanthochromisme
Le Xanthochromisme est une pigmentation inhabituellement jaune chez un animal. Il est souvent associé au manque de pigmentation rouge habituelle et à son remplacement par du jaune. La cause est habituellement génétique mais peut aussi être une alimentation. Un sondage de l'Université de Cornell sur les oiseaux peu fréquentés qui ont visité des mangeoires ont révélé que 4% de ces oiseaux étaient décrits comme xanthoscopiques. Le contraire du xanthomycisme, une déficience ou une absence totale de pigment jaune, est connu sous le nom d'axanthisme. Les oiseaux présentant un xanthoscopie génétique, en particulier des mutations délibérément élevées de plusieurs espèces de perroquets en aviculture, sont appelés "lutinos". Les oiseaux sauvages dans lesquels le xanthomycisme a été enregistré incluent le Wagtail jaune, la paruline de bois, la paruline de Cape May, le Grosbeak de Rose-Breasted, le Grosbeak du soir, le Pic de ventre rouge, le Tanager écarlate, le Cardinal du Nord, le Pic à grande tache, le Tailorbird commun, le Shrike à bout craquelé, Kākāriki et Kea.
