Xérographie
La Xerographie est une technique de photocopie sèche inventée par Chester Carlson en 1938, pour laquelle il a reçu le brevet US 2 297 691 le 6 octobre 1942. Carlson s'appelait à l'origine son électrophotographie d'invention. Il a ensuite été renommé xérographie - des racines grecques ξηρός xeros "dry" et -γραφία -graphia "writing" - pour souligner que, contrairement aux techniques de reproduction utilisées comme cyanotypes, ce procédé n'a utilisé aucun produit chimique liquide. L'innovation de Carlson a combiné l'impression électrostatique avec la photographie, contrairement à la procédure d'impression électrostatique sèche inventée par Georg Christoph Lichtenberg en 1778. Le processus original de Carlson était encombrant, nécessitant plusieurs étapes de traitement manuel avec des plaques plates. Il était près de 18 ans avant l'élaboration d'un processus entièrement automatisé, la percée clé étant l'utilisation d'un tambour cylindrique revêtu de sélénium au lieu d'une plaque plate. Cela a entraîné le premier copieur automatique commercial, le Xerox 914, publié par Haloid / Xerox en 1960. Avant cette année, Carlson avait proposé son idée à plus d'une douzaine d'entreprises, mais aucune ne l'intéressait.
