Le Yunnan est une province de la République populaire de Chine, située à l'extrême sud-ouest du pays. Elle s'étend sur environ 394 000 kilomètres carrés et compte 45,7 millions de personnes. La capitale de la province est Kunming, anciennement connu sous le nom de Yunnan. La province borde le Vietnam, le Laos et la Birmanie. Le Yunnan est situé dans une région montagneuse, avec des hautes altitudes au nord-ouest et des altitudes faibles dans le sud-est. La plupart de la population vit dans la partie orientale de la province. À l'ouest, l'altitude peut varier de plus de 3 000 mètres entre les sommets des montagnes et les vallées des rivières. Les réserves d'aluminium, de plomb, de zinc et d'étain de Yunnan sont les plus importantes en Chine, et il existe également d'importantes réserves de cuivre et de nickel. L'Empire Han a d'abord enregistré des relations diplomatiques avec la province à la fin du IIe siècle av. Il est devenu le siège d'un royaume parlant Tibeto-Burman de Nanzhao au 8ème siècle après JC. Nanzhao était multiethnique, mais l'élite a probablement parlé d'un dialecte nordique de Yi.
